Chemiions emitted from jet engines potentially influence the formation of aerosol particles and eventually even condensaation nuclei. Yet untill very recently little was known about their number densities, masses and chemical nature. An important question is wether a high fuel sulfur content (FSC) and conversion of the emitted sulfur spezies into sulfuric acid increases the mean chemiion size. Measurements in the exhaust of a jet engine at the ground were made with (i) a Gerdien condensor measuring total ion number densities (ii) an IOMAS (IOn MAss Spectrometer) measuring integral spectra covering a mass range up to 9000 atomic mass units (amu). Our measurements indicate: (i) a large initial ion number density n0. The decrease of n with increasing plume age is controlled by ion-ion recombination and (ii) the presence of large ions (up to 6000amu) even when the FSC is very low (2.6mg/kg) indicates that the growth of chemiions is not markedly influenced by sulfur for the FSCs used.
