Macroscopic Flow Equations for Non-isothermal Polymeric Liquids — •M. Dressler, B. J. Edwards, and H. C. Öttinger — ETH Zürich, Department of Materials, Institute of Polymers, and Swiss F.I.T. Rheocenter, CH-8092 Zürich (Switzerland)

The full theoretical description of the thermodynamic and rheological properties of compressible, non-isothermal liquids with internal microstructure is one of the most fascinating and challenging problems in polymer physics. A new thermodynamic approach which has been developed in our group over the last few years will be presented and explained [1]. This new approach condenses all relevant mechanical principles and thermodynamical laws into a single mathematical structural equation describing the system’s dynamical behaviour. It will be outlined how this new approach has been applied to obtain a full set of mechanically and thermodynamically consistent macroscopic flow equations for non-isothermal polymeric liquids. This permits us to review critically the flow equations of Rational Thermodynamics [2]. Furthermore, we show how a non-isothermal Hookean dumbbell model of incompressible polymer fluids [3] can be generalized to account for a non-isothermal, compressible fluid.
