Spectroscopy of single probe molecules embedded in an amorphous host — •Taras Plakhotnik, Elizabeth Donley, and Daniel Walser — Physical Chemistry Laboratory, ETH Zurich, 8092-CH

Questions which do not appear when dealing with an ensemble are of primary significance for single molecules. For example, how mathematically correct is it to define a spectrum for a single molecule in a fluctuating environment? How can such a spectrum be measured? How is this spectrum related to spectra measured for ensembles? Now these conceptual problems of Single Molecule Spectroscopy are solved both theoretically and experimentally. Additionally, experimental spectra of single molecules measured in a temperature interval 50 mK - 1.7 K have revealed unexpected correlations and distributions of different molecular parameters. These correlations and distributions are not accessible when an ensemble of molecules is measured. A physical model which can explain the observations is discussed.
