Single moloecule fluorescence lifetimes: terrylene in p-terphenyl — •G.S. Harms — Institute of Biophysics, University of Linz, 4040 Linz, Austria

We report the cryogenic and room temperature single molecule fluorescence lifetimes of terrylene in the crystalline host of p-terphenyl. Measurements of over 50 single molecules were performed. A distribution of fluorescence lifetimes was observed ranging from 3 ns to 5 ns or in terms of the natural linewidth of 30 to 50 MHz. These values represent the low temperature linewidth limit as observed by Kummer et al and by Donley et al. The distribution of the lifetimes is likely due to dipole interactions between host and guest molecules.
