The exposure to low energy electrons significantly modifies alkanethiolate (AT) self-assembled monolayers (SAM). Both the alkane chains and S-Au bonds are simultaneously affected. These effects can however be tailored by the incorporating specific molecular groups into the chains. To study the related phenomena we investigated low energy electron induced damage in different derivatives of the conventional AT SAMs, namely C6H13-SO2-C11H22-S/Au, C6H13-S-C11H22-S/Au, and C11H23-SO2-C6H4-O-C5H10-S/Au. These systems were exposed to electrons of energies 10, 20 and 50 eV and doses between 300 and 10000 µC/cm2. The irradiated films were characterized in-situ by angle resolved near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The investigated SAMs were found to be more sensitive to electron irradiation than conventional alkanethiolates of similar thickness. The SAMs with the sulfonic group also showed some selectivity of the radiation induced damage. The molecular environment of this group was found to be of minor importance.
