Recently, we investigated structure-property relationships for a series of merocyanine chromophores for photorefractive applications in low glass-transition polymeric materials. Exceptionally large photorefractive figures-of-merit were determined by electroabsorption measurements in diluted solution for the best chromophores. However, the high dipole moments of these chromophores caused problems related to solubility, compatibility and aggregation of the dyes in the poly(N-vinylcarbazole) photoconducting matrix. Now we achieved significant progress in the electric- field induced alignment of highly birefringent ATOP merocyanine chromophores by substituent variations. The new material we report shows unprecedented optical gain and high diffraction efficiency at low field strength and operates in the near infrared at wavelengths of commercially available laser diodes.
