Controlling the self-assembly from solution of a conjugated macromolecule at surfaces — •Paolo Samorí1, Viola Francke2, Klaus Müllen2, and Jürgen P. Rabe11Humboldt University Berlin, Department of Physics, Invalidenstr. 110, 10115 Berlin — 2MPI for Polymer Research, Ackermannweg 10, 55128 Mainz

A precise control of the self-assembly of a conjugated (macro)molecule on flat solid substrates is a prerequisite to design a working molecular electronic device. Oligomeric and polymeric phenyleneethynylene derivatives have been grown on conductive and insulating substrates from solutions. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy investigations at the liquid-HOPG interface allowed us to monitor the dynamics of single oligomers on a few minutes time scale. This Ostwald ripening phenomenon is governed by the minimization of the line tensions. Single macromolecules have been also visualized and revealed that the macromolecular 2D crystallisation occurs by means of a very precise macromolecular fractionation on the basal of graphite. On the other hand, highly oriented micrometer long polymeric 3D nanoribbons with a molecular cross-section have been grown on insulating substrates and investigated with Scanning Force Microscopy. These architectures, upon chemical functionalization, are molecular nanowires ready to bridge two Au nanoelectrodes in a molecular scale electronics device.
