Intermetallic RNiSb (R=La, ... ,Lu) compounds show a wide range of interesting physical properties, varying strongly within this series of rare earth atoms. The magnetic properties include antiferromagnets, ferromagnets, paramagnets as well as non magnetic ground states. The electrical transport properties reach from metals over halfmetals to semiconductors, which reveal a giant magnetoresistance effect. A crucial role in the understanding of these effects play the states in the valence band and around the Fermi-level which are investigated by the means of different photoemission techniques. The electronic states in the valence band are investigated with X-ray photoemission spectroscopy showing a good agreement with theoretical calculations. Further information about the unoccupied states is gained by X-ray emission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. Constant initial state spectra were measured with resonant photoemission at the 4d→4f photothreshold, which reveal a different behaviour on the 4f peaks depending on the spin state, being explained on the basis of different final states.
