The constructive role of noise in excitable media — •J. Garcia–Ojalvo — Dept. de Física i E.N., Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Colom 11, E-08222 Terrassa, Spanien

Many physical, chemical and biological systems are known to possess excitable properties. This means that, even though the system has a unique stable fixed point, certain perturbations excite it away from the steady state and make it undergo a long excursion in phase space before returning to rest. These perturbations, that propagate in extended media through the action of spatial coupling, can be induced either by means of suitable initial conditions or through fluctuating forces. Therefore, noise can be expected (and is indeed seen) to play a relevant, constructive role in the behavior of excitable systems. Recently investigated examples are coherent resonance [1] and noise–supported traveling waves [2]. This communication aims to review some results on the constructive influence of externally controlled noise in the spatiotemporal dynamics of excitable media.
