We consider two examples of extended media under the influence of additive noise: a system of coupled stochastic oscillators and spatial nonlinear lattice which consists of overdamped oscillators. In both systems role of the additive noise is crusial. In the first system additive noise increases signal to noise ratio, resulting in stochastic resonance. In the second system additive noise causes phase transition and induces ordered spatial ordered patterns. Another interesting result is that additive noise can induce first-order phase transition. Surprisingly, parallels between stochastic resonance and nonequilibrium phase transition can be found.
