Manipulation and transport of cold atoms using an adaptable magnetic grating — •Peter Rosenbusch1, B.V. Hall1, I.G. Hughes2, C.V. Saba1, and E.A. An adaptable magnetic grating is realised by adding a bias field to a static magnetic mirror. This permits real-time manipulation of a cold atom cloud on time scales down to 100µs. Two orthogonal sinusoidal fields in quadrature generate a traveling grating of adjustable depth and velocity. This provides a new method of manipulation in which neutral atoms are transported across the surface by surfing along the moving wave.
