Production of Carbon Nanotubes — •Frank Rohmund, Kevin Bladh, and Lena Falk — School of Physics and Engineering Physics, Gothenburg University and Chalmers University of Technology, S-412 96 Gothenburg, Sweden
Carbon nanotubes were produced using gas phase chemical and CVD methods. Growth of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is observed in the gas phase upon catalytic disproportionation of carbon monoxide on iron nanoparticles. In competition with nanotube growth, formation of metal particles decorating the SWNT occurs. These particles are single-crystalline and are encapsulated in few layers of graphitic carbon. Addition if approx. 25 % hydrogen increases the SWNT by a factor of 4. No enhanced SWNT growth is observed upon addition of acetylen. However, iron particles deposited in
the hot zone of the production furnace catalyse the growth of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT). This provides a simple way of continous productioin of films of (aligned) MWNT.
