Absolute Copper Vapour Densities During The Early Phases Of Pseudospark Discharge Measured by Laser Induced Fluorescence — •Vladimir Arsov and Klaus Frank — Phys. Inst. I, Univ. Erlangen-Nuremberg, Erwin-Rommel-Str.1, D-91058 Erlangen

The early phases of pseudospark discharge include the ignition-, the hollow cathode- and the bore hole phase. For the first time Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) has been successfully applied in this temporal region of pseudospark to derive the absolute ground state copper vapour densities. These correlate to the atoms, sputtered from the cathode. The geometry of the discharge chamber is typical for that of a single gap pseudospark switch, with cathode made of copper and anode made of tungsten. Measurements are performed in the main gap region side-on the symmetry axis with laser excitation on 324,75 nm. LIF is detected on 510,55 nm. Use of different buffer gases, namely hydrogen, helium, argon and neon allow comparison of their sputtering effectiveness.
