To analyze and understand the processes important for NOx removal from flue gases we measure the generation and decay of ozone and different nitrogen oxides in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) by means of classical absorption spectroscopy. In the course of an measurement we have noticed significant changes in the intensity of the recorded spectral lamp intensity, apart from the absorption itself. These changes can produce significant errors in the determination of the particle densities as well as an increase of the minimum density that we can detect with our experimental system. We have found two different effects that are the reason of these changes: the thermal lens effect and the effect of Lloyd’s mirror. We discuss here the methods to avoid these effects and make a prediction of the experimental errors.
