Simple and versatile traps for neutral atoms can be built using the magnetic trapping potentials created by a current carrying wire and a magnetic bias field. These traps can achieve very high gradients at low power consumption. Here we present experiments with a "Z"-trap. A wire, bent in "Z"-shape, together with a homogeneous bias field creates a trap with a nonzero field in the center which prevents Majorana transitions. Trap depth, width, position and steepness can be independently controlled by wire current and bias field. We measured these scaling laws, showing the perfect suitability of the "Z"-trap for miniaturization and integration into mesoscopic atom optical devices. Compression parameters of conventional magnetic traps in BEC experiments could be easily obtained and we were able to measure the rate of 2-body collisions in the compressed trap.
