Inseparability, Distillability, and Entanglement Purification for Continuous Quantum Variables — •Géza Giedke, Lu-Ming Duan, J. Ignacio Cirac, and Peter Zoller — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Innsbruck, Technikerstrasse 25, A-6020 Innsbruck

The proposal of a quantum optical implementation of fault-tolerant universal quantum computation with continuous variables (Lloyd, Braunstein, Phys. Rev. Lett., 82, and the experimental demonstration of quantum teleportation of continuous variables (Furusawa, et al., Science 282, 706) have sparked interest in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces as a setting for quantum information processing and communication.

We discuss separability and distillability properties for states of two infinite dimensional systems with particular regard to the experimentally important class of Gaussian states.

We present entanglement purifucation protocols, i.e. operations, that allow to fight the deterioration of entanglement caused by the transmission through a noisy channel and therefore represent a crucial tool for long-distance quantum communication.
