Dynamics and ground-state cooling of an indium-magnesium ion chain — •G. Morigi, S. K"ohler, W. Lange, V. Ludsteck, and H. Walther — Max-Planck-Institut f"ur Quantenoptik

In an ion-trap quantum computer the vibrational motion of the ions can be efficiently cooled and decoherence can be reduced by using two different ion species for cooling and computing. An ideally suited system is a chain of indium and magnesium ions, in which red sideband excitation of indium leads to sympathetic cooling of the entire string. The dynamics related to quantum logic evolves in the magnesium ions only and is not affected by the cooling laser. We present a theoretical analysis of the mechanical properties, in particular the stability of a heterogeneous ion chain and discuss the possibility of laser-cooling to the ground state of the collective motion in the confining potential.
