We study the quantum Hamiltonian of an ion confined in a nonlinear electromagnetic trap. Using the coherent state approach developed in [1] and [2] we obtain an analytic description of the trapped ion dynamics in terms of the displaced squeezed states and the corresponding even and odd Schrödinger-cat states. The expectation values of the quantum Hamiltonian with respect to the displaced squeezed states yield a classical Hamiltonian. Moreover, we obtain a quasi-classical description for the collective center of mass motion of the stored ion system considered in [3] and discuss the stability properties of the trapped ions for suitable trap anharmonicities.
