Hyperon interactions and hypernuclei are investigated in a microscopic approach extending the previously introduced Density Dependent Relativistic Hadron Field (DDRH) theory to the strangeness sector. Interactions in the baryon octet are obtained from infinite matter Dirac-Brueckner theory from which effective, in-medium DDRH baryon-meson vertices are extracted. The diagrammatic structure of Dirac-Brueckner interactions indicates rather simple scaling laws for hyperon vertices where the renormalization factors are determined by the ratios of free space coupling constants. The model is applied to single Λ nuclei. Free space NΛ T-matrix results are used for the scalar vertex and the Λ-ω vertex scaling factor is adjusted to a selected set of hypernuclear data. Spectroscopic data of single Λ hypernuclei over the full mass range are well described. The reduced Λ spin-orbit splitting is reproduced and found to be related closely to the medium dependence of scalar and vector interactions. The production of hypernuclei by hadronic probes, e.g. in high-energy (π,K) reactions at GSI, is described by an eikonal distorted wave approach accounting for initial and final state interactions of the incoming and outgoing mesons. An effective Lagrangian approach and microscopic DDRH wave functions are used for the production vertices.
