Digital signal processing for γ-ray tracking based on PPADC hardware — •W. Gast, R.M. Lieder, L. Mihailescu, and M.J. Rossewij — Institut für Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum Jülich

Gamma-ray tracking is the basic concept to improve the efficiency and sensitivity of the next generation of γ-spectrometers for nuclear spectroscopy. A γ-ray tracking array consists of segmented Ge detectors and a multi channel DAQ system, employing digital pulse shape analysis for the event reconstruction. The pulse shape analysis involves algorithms for event timing, localization of the interactions and energy determination. For the implementation of a multi channel DAQ system, a compact and low cost version of the Pulse Processing Analog to Digital Converter (PPADC) has been developed. It provides for each channel two 12 bit 40 Msps ADCs, an in-circuit programmable logic device (PLD) and a high-performance digital signal processor (DSP). Several pulse shape analysis algorithms to generate trigger, time, and position information have been implemented on the PPADC hardware to investigate the amount of processing recourses required for on-line signal processing. The fraction of used PLD logic and DSP execution time was determined to provide insight in the performance with respect to the sampling frequency and trigger rate.
