In December 1998, the COoler SYnchrotron COSY (Julic) extracted its first polarized proton-beam with a momentum of 797 MeV/c.

In order to control the polarization online an external polarimeter was designed and constructed at Bochum. The beam-polarization was measured by detecting the quasi-elastic scattered protons at the internal ¹²C -target of the polarimeter. This analyzing reaction allows to calculate the polarization by using the well-known maximum value of the analyzing-power A_y at ϑ = 10,5^∘ ( lab.) and the measured asymmetry ε of the recorded counting-rates.
