Protons accelerated at COSY to kinetic energies of 0.8-2.5 GeV have been used to measure production cross sections for neutrons and light charged particles (LCP’s) with thin targets (< 10 mg/cm2) ranging from Al up to U. The request to provide such data with high accuracy is a consequence of the current effort to design a new generation of neutron sources as the European Spallation Source (ESS).
Exclusive data were taken event-by-event with 4π-detectors both for neutrons and LCP’s. This allows a systematic study of the characteristic observables for different stages of the temporal evolution of the spallation reaction: inelastic collision probability, excitation energy distribution, pre-equilibrium emission, and inclusive production cross sections. Intra-nuclear-cascade-models coupled with evaporation-models have been confronted with the data. A satisfactory agreement for the production of neutrons but considerable differences for LCP’s are observed between experiment and calculations as well as between different models.
