The phenomenon of signature inversion was found within the π g9/2 ν g9/2 bands in 74,76,78Br below spin I ≈ 10ℏ. We have studied the next lighter odd-odd isotope 72Br nucleus. Excited states in 72Br were populated using the reaction 40Ca(40Ca,1α3p1n) at a beam energy of 185 MeV. Coincidences of γ rays, charged particles and neutrons have been measured using the EUROBALL III array.
The level scheme has been substantially expanded up to spin 26 and 13 MeV excitation energy. The negative-parity signature partners display a very clear effect of signature inversion around spin I ≈ 15 ℏ. This phenomenon is discussed in terms of the configuration-dependent shell-correction cranking model.
