Meson Production in p+d Reactions — •Wojciech Klimala — Institut für Kernphysik, FZ Jülich, 52425 Jülich

Differential cross sections for π and η production in pd collision were measured at beam energies in the vicinity of the underlying resonances, i. e. the Δ (1332) in case of the pion and the N*(1535) in case of the eta meson. The experiments were performed at COSY accelerator in Jülich with the GEM detector system consisting of high purity germanium detectors and the Big Karl magnetic spectrometer. A liquid deuterium target with extremely thin walls (≤ 1µ m) was used.

The detection system had full acceptance for the measured processes. It allowed to identify 3H and 3He nuclei and to reconstruct all three components of their momenta.

Usage of the deuterium target is the first step in the studies of the meson production in a nucleus, where in-medium effects start to be important. The investigated cross sections depend on the nuclear wave functions, especially the reaction p+d3He+η is extremely sensitive to the high-momentum component of the deuteron wave function.

For the pion production an enhancement is predicted due to the pion rescattering on the spectator nucleon. The present data are compared with other data. Possible signs of isospin symmetry breaking are discussed.
