Determination of double differential cross sections for subthreshold K+ production at ANKE — •H. Junghans — Institut für Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich

One of the research goals of the new spectrometer ANKE at COSY-Jülich is the study of in-medium effects on elementary processes. In this context the production of K+-mesons in proton-nucleus interactions at projectile energies below the free NN threshold of 1.58 GeV is investigated. The measurement of momentum spectra of the produced kaons is expected to provide a deeper understanding of strangeness production in the nuclear environment.

ANKE allows to analyze momenta and emission angles of the products from proton induced reactions in internal targets of COSY. Its detector systems including electronics and DAQ are optimized for the selection of few K+-mesons out of a very intense background of protons and pions which is essential for the studies at very low projectile energies. In 1999 measurements of the double differential cross sections d2σ / dΩ d pK+ have been performed using diamond strip targets at proton energies down to Tp = 1.0 GeV. K+-meson spectra between ∼ 150 and ∼ 500 MeV/c have been deduced for projectile energies between 2.0 and 1.0 GeV. The results will be presented and compared with theoretical predictions for different assumptions for the reaction mechanisms.
