Forces in the double pendulum — •Antje Ohlhoff — ZARM, Universität Bremen, Am Fallturm, 28359 Bremen

For the engineering of mechanical systems with a complex interplay of regular and chaotic behavior it is important to know the forces involved. We show how the forces can be computed and their time development evaluated. We demonstrate the characteristic features of periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic motion. We compare various classical methods of analysis to a redundant version of wavelet analysis. The latter is proposed as the most informative coherent representation of the distribution of times, frequencies, and amplitudes.
