Universal Distributions for Growth Processes and Random Matrices — •Michael Prähofer and Herbert Spohn — Zentrum Mathematik und Physik Department, TU München, 80290 München

We determine the height fluctuations in the one-dimensional polynuclear growth model by a mapping to longest increasing subsequences in random permutations. Their length is distributed as the largest eigenvalue of a Gaussian random matrix. Depending on the ensemble chosen we identify three universal distributions characterizing the fundamental modes of selfsimilar stochastic surface growth in one dimension [M. Prähofer, H. Spohn, cond-mat/9910273].
