Study of the Subjet Multiplicity — •Oscar González — DESY (Madrid University), Notkestr. 85, 22603 Hamburg

The internal structure of jets has been studied in neutral-current deep-inelastic ep scattering at high Q2 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets have been identified using the longitudinally invariant kT-cluster algorithm. The structure of jets has been investigated in terms of the subjet multiplicity defined as the number of clusters resolved in a jet by reapplying the jet algorithm at a smaller resolution scale. Measurements are presented of the mean subjet multiplicity for jets with transverse energies ETjet > 15 GeV. The mean subjet multiplicity decreases as ETjet increases and shows no significant dependence on the jet pseudorapidity. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo calculations describe the measurements well. The measurements are consistent with the predictions for a pure sample of quark-initiated jets. The comparison to similar measurements in γ p interactions confirms the predicted differences between quark- and gluon-initiated jets.
