The Equation of State of Mono- and Polydisperse Granular Media — •Oliver Strauss and Stefan Luding — Institut füer Computeranwendungen 1, Pfaffenwaldring 27, 70569 Stuttgart

Simulation results of dense hard sphere gases with different particles size distributions are compared with theoretical predictions for the pair distribution function and the pressure. The effects of the different size distributions are accounted for by only one parameter, namely the width of the size distribution function. Based on the simulation data, the known theories for the dilute and dense gas are enhanced by empirical corrections. The two limiting cases are combined by a fit function to obtain a global equation of state (EqS). The agreement of the global EqS with the simulations is excellent for all densities including the order-disorder transition where the deviation remains smaller than 3 density profile of an elastic hard sphere gas under gravity. One finds perfect agreement with the simulation.
