Size dependence of self-diffusion in a dense binary hard-sphere liquid — •Josef Jäckle1 und Hidetoshi Kawai21Department of Physics, University of Konstanz — 2Department of Physics, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan

Using MD simulation we studied the dependence on system size of self-diffusion in a binary liquid of hard spheres at a density considerably higher than the freezing density of the one-component liquid. The difference of the velocity-autocorrelation functions for large and small system size is well explained by the coupling of the diffusion of a tagged particle to the modes of collective flow for times , where is the mean time of free flight between collisions. Surprisingly, has its maximum in the region of shorter times . The corresponding size dependence of the self-diffusion coefficients depends strongly on this short-time behaviour, the possible origin of which will be discussed.
