The energy cascade in fully developed turbulence – unification of two phenomenological approaches — •Jochen Cleve — MPI für Physik komplexer Systeme

Within the inertial range of fully developed Navier-Stokes turbulence the intermittent statistics of the velocity field is related to the energy dissipation field. Multifractal branching processes are able to reproduce many facets of the latter, including scaling exponents and multiplier distributions. Another phenomenological approach, recently suggested by Naert, Friedrich and Peinke (PRE 56, 6719), describes the cascade process as a Markov process in scale. Some of its details appear to contradict the former approach. These differences can be removed as we have to distinguish bare and dressed fields in multifractal branching processes; results derived from the small-scale resummation of dressed multifractal fields are in full agreement with results of the scale-Markovian description.
