The ground and excited states of a two-dimensional electron system in strong magnetic fields — •Sergey Mikhailov — Universität Regensburg, D-93040 Regensburg

An analytic solution of the many-particle Schrödinger equation for a system of two-dimensional (2D) electrons in strong magnetic fields is found. An estimate of the cohesive energy, made for a finite-size 2D system with 19 electrons at ν=1/3, is very close to that obtained by Laughlin [1] (ν is the Landau level filling factor). Contrary to previous theories, our many-particle wave functions describe the properties of the system at all ν≤ 1, continuously as a function of magnetic field. At ν→ 0 a transition to the Wigner crystal state is observed. Physical characteristics of the system in the ground and excited states (the particle and current densities, the pair-correlation function, etc) are calculated.
