Tip-sample interaction in apertureless near-field optical microscopy — •A. Pack and R. Wannemacher — Institut fuer Physik, Universitaet Chemnitz, D-09107 Chemnitz

In view of applications in apertureless near-field optical microscopy we have used aggregate Mie theory in order to self-consistently calculate the power scattered from a tip-sample complex in an evanescent field, which is generated by total internal reflection. For metallic samples we obtain images, which depend strongly on the polarisation of the evanescent field and on the frequency of the optical excitation relative to the plasma resonance frequency of the sample. Outside of the plasma resonance p-polarised excitation allows reasonable imaging of the sample, in contrast to s-polarisation Close to contact and close to the resonance frequency we obtain significant contributions from higher multipoles, even for very small particle sizes and for non-metallic tips.
