Corrugation vs Resistance – A Pictorial Model of the STM — •Mustafa H.A. Riza, Christian Bracher, and Manfred Kleber — Institut für Theoretische Physik T30, Physik-Department der Technischen Universität München, James-Franck-Str., D-85747 Garching

We present a quantum mechanical scattering theory for the STM that is based on the observation that the STM tip acts like a localized source (or sink) of electrons. Therefore, the tip is modelled by pointlike multipole sources with an emission characteristic given by the corresponding spherical harmonic, an approach first proposed by Chen. Using s–, pz–, and dz2–tip states, the theory is applied to simple metal surfaces. With increasing multipole order the lateral electron emission pattern narrows, resulting in an enhanced resolution of the STM.
