Time-domain calculation of surface nonlinear susceptibilities — •Maria Stamova and Frank Rebentrost — Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, D-85748 Garching bei München

We discuss the calculation of linear and nonlinear optical response functions for Si (111) and (100) surfaces. The electronic structure is modelled by cluster or slab configurations in R- as well as in k- space using a tight-binding parametrization of the underlying hamiltonian. We apply a time-dependent density operator formalism to calculate the corresponding linear R(τ) and nonlinear R12) response functions for the optical polarizations which directly describe the response to ultrashort pulses. Their Fourier transforms are the usual frequency-dependent optical susceptibilities, e.g. χ(2)1−ω2; ω12) for second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation from surfaces.
