Nano and mesoscopic semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), equally called "artificial atomsNo-dq, are systems in which the charge carriers are confined in all directions to characteristic lengths comparable to the de Broglie wave length of the particles. The extremely versatile nature of QDs makes them an appealing candidate both for applied and fundamental research. E.g., parameters such as particle number and charge density can be experimentally varied in regions not accessible in atomic or molecular systems which renders possible a detailed study of correlation and confinement effects. In this theoretical work concepts are presented for the description of the correlated electron dynamics of few electron QDs in a laser field and for the treatment of noncubic, non-Bravais lattices of QDs. The coupling between the dots is considered in the dipole approximation and the corresponding non-relativistic Schrödinger equation is solved analytically.
