The study of angle and energy resolved multiply differential (e,3e) cross sections for the electron impact double ionization (DI) process is fundamental to understand the dynamical e - e correlation during the collision. Such study yields the ultimate information obtainable on the collision dynamics, and provides the most sensitive probe for theoretical approaches. The promise in the theoretical investigations of these processes lie in the modeling and understanding of the inherently non-separable many-body interacting systems in the final state.

For this purpose, the ideal target is helium [1], the simplest two-electron system which leads to a pure four-body final state. We have measured full sets of coplanar (e,3e) angular distributions for DI of He [2] at 1.1 keV impact energy and equal ejection energies, 10 eV. Comparison is made with photo-DI, and with first order theoretical models : the BBK model, the convergent close coupling model and the correlated four-body final-state model.
