First Results from a Novel Electron Scattering Apparatus using a Laser Photoelectron Source — •J. Bömmels, A. Gopalan, M.-W. Ruf, and H. Hotop — FB Physik, Universität Kaiserslautern

The use of photoelectron sources holds promise for reaching very high resolution in electron collision experiments as demonstrated by several groups [1-5]. With the aim to study sharp resonance structure in angle differential electron scattering from free atoms and molecules we constructed a new apparatus which combines a laser photoelectron source with a collimated, triply differentially pumped supersonic beam target [6]. Electrons (about 108 s−1) are created by two-step threshold photoionization of potassium atoms, extracted by a weak electrostatic field, accelerated and focused onto the perpendicular target beam. In the first experiments electrons, scattered elastically from rare gas atoms in the region of the lowest Feshbach resonances, are simultaneously detected at several selected angles with retarding field analysers. This work has been supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Forschergruppe Niederenergetische Elektronenstreuprozesse), Graduiertenkolleg Laser- und Teilchenspektroskopie and Zentrum für Lasermesstechnik und Diagnostik. We thank S. Götte, A. Landwehr and K. Franz for fruitful experimental cooperation
