Trapping of a single Ca+ ion for its use as a frequency standard — •HERBANE Mustapha, KNOOP Martina, CHAMPENOIS Caroline, HOUSSIN Marie, VEDEL Michel, and VEDEL Fernande — Université de Provence, PIIM (UMR 6633 CNRS-UAMI), Centre de St. Jérôme, case C21, 13397 Marseille Cedex20, France

Ca+ ion has an electric quadripole transition 4S1/2−3D5/2 at 729 nm with a natural linewidth of 200 mHz and which can serve as a frequency reference in the visible domain. Trapping in a miniature trap and laser cooling of one such ion allows access to the Lamb-Dicke regime where first order Doppller broadening is eliminated.

We have set up a miniature ion trap of Paul-Straubel-type. It consists of a ring with inner diameter 1.4 mm and four compensation electrodes. The macromotion frequency is 2 MHz. We use an intracavity doubled Titanium-Sapphire laser resonnant with the 4S1/2−4P1/2 transition at 397 nm to cool the ions. We plan to use only diode lasers in our experiment. The cooling laser will be replaced by frequency doubling of an injection-locked powerful broad area diode laser at 794 nm. The repumping laser is a diode at 866 nm frequency locked on a Fabry-Perot cavity. For the interrogation of the clock transition, we mount a broad area diode laser on an external cavity and we plan to stabilise its frequency on an ULE cavity (Finesse = 15000) by the use of the Pound-Drever technique.
