We report experimental results of proton- and electron-beam-induced near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence in high-pressure Xe gas at room temperature. The investigated wavelength band spans the range 0.7 <l< 1.8 microns. In the previously unexplored range for l > 1.05 microns we have detected an intense and broad continuum NIR fluorescence centered about l < 1.3 microns. The NIR continuum shows a large shift towards longer wavelengths as the gas pressure is increased from 0.1 up to 3.0 MPa. We believe that this continuum has the same origin as the very well known VUV first and second continua of noble gases excimers and that the pressure-dependent shift can be easily explained in terms of the interaction of the outer Rydberg electron of the excimer with the atoms of the host gas.
