Results for dielectronic recombination (DR) with very heavy Li-like ions will be presented. In particular, measurements with Au76+, Pb79+, Bi80+ and U89+ have been performed at the electron cooler of the storage ring ESR (GSI). The experimental data cover low energy DR resonances associated with Δ n = 0 core excitations (2s1/2 → 2p1/2 and 2s1/2 → 2p3/2), where the free electron is either captured into n ≥ 20 or n=5,6, respectively. For such heavy ions the experimental findings can only be explained within a fully relativistic theoretical description of the DR process. In addition, the measurements are sensitive to QED contributions up to the order α2 as well as to corrections caused by the finite size of the atomic nucleus.
