Results for dielectronic recombination (DR) with very heavy Li-like ions will be presented. In particular, measurements with Au⁷⁶⁺, Pb⁷⁹⁺, Bi⁸⁰⁺ and U⁸⁹⁺ have been performed at the electron cooler of the storage ring ESR (GSI). The experimental data cover low energy DR resonances associated with Δ n = 0 core excitations (2s_1/2 → 2p_1/2 and 2s_1/2 → 2p_3/2), where the free electron is either captured into n ≥ 20 or n=5,6, respectively. For such heavy ions the experimental findings can only be explained within a fully relativistic theoretical description of the DR process. In addition, the measurements are sensitive to QED contributions up to the order α² as well as to corrections caused by the finite size of the atomic nucleus.
