We have studied electron capture and fragmentation in C604+-C60 collision at a relative velocity of 0.024 a.u. The measured energy losses for emission of m C2-units from the projectile for single- and double-electron capture are found to lie between 12m and 24m eV. The lower limit is compatible with emission of m C2-units (assumed activation energy of 12 eV) from the projectile only, while the upper limit requires emission of m fragments also from the target. The mechanism is mainly elastic scattering, as corroborated by our Monte Carlo calculations for C-C60 collisions at the same velocity, but there might also be additional contributions due to electron capture to excited projectile states. This effect, and the higher initial projectile temperature, may explain why the target appears to be less damaged (fragmented) than the projectile.
