We will present time-dependent density functional calculations for the energy loss of highly charged ions undergoing grazing interaction with the walls of microcapillaries. The ions approach the walls close enough to suffer a significant amount of energy loss without, however, experiencing charge exchange. Electron-electron correlation is taken into account within the linear response theory. We perform the simulations for a metallic microcapillary of Al and Ne10+, Ar18+ and Kr36+ projectiles. The amount of energy loss is correlated to the distance of closest approach which determines the strength of the interaction between the projectile and the solid surface. Since the scattering angle and the distance of closest approach are strongly correlated, the distance-dependent stopping power and thereby the surface dielectric properties of the capillary material at large distances can be probed in detail.
