Electron emission in the electron energy range from 2−300 eV was measured for 60.5 MeV/u Kr34+ ions impacting on H2 at the GANIL accelerator facility in Caen, France. We anticipated that electron emission from H2 may exhibit interference phenomena similar as in Young’s two-slit experiment. The high projectile velocity of ∼ 40 a. u. is advantageous, since the time difference in striking the two hydrogen centers of the H2 molecule is negligible and, thus, the coherence of electron emission from the two centers is enhanced. Model calculations were introduced to guide the search for interference effects in the electron spectra produced by coherent electron emission from the two identical H atoms. In the experiments a full sinusoidal-like oscillation was observed within the electron energy range up to 250 eV in good agreement with the calculations. For future experiments we point out that the interference pattern can be used to obtain direct information about the separation of the atoms in the molecular target.
