Laser induced fluorescence of rubidium vapor — •Ticijana Ban, Hrvoje Skenderovic, and Goran Pichler — Institute of Physics, P.O. Box 304, HR-10001 Zagreb, Croatia

Fluoresence spectra in rubidium vapor induced by diode laser light tuned in the self-broadened wing of the Rb D2 line (780.027 nm) was measured. Rubidium vapor was generated in the linear all sapphire cell [1,2]. The experimental arrangement which allows the observation of the backward fluorescence was used. Fluorescence spectra of the rubidium vapor excited through the self-broadened Rb D2 line shows: very strong Rb D1 (794.76 nm) emission line, Rb ns-5p, nd-5p and np-5s emissions, Rb2 diffuse band in the wavelength region from 600 nm to 610 nm [3], Rb2 B-X molecular band and Rb2 triplet satellite bands (1 3Pg (2g, 1g, 0g+, 0g-) - a 3Su+(0u-, 1u) transitions) peaking at 739.8 nm, 744.1 nm and 748.1 nm. The dependence of the atomic and molecular fluoresence intensity upon a temperature of the rubidium vapor, the excitation wavelength and the intensity of the laser light was investigated. The processes through which the Rb2 diffuse band can be populated are discussed in details. [1] T. Ban, S. Ter-Avetisyan, R. Beuc, H. Skenderovic and G. Pichler, Chem. Phys. Lett. 313, 110 (1999).
