Complete three body dissociation of CO2 in collisions with 5.9 MeV/u highly charged Xe-ions — •B. Siegmann1, I. Küster1, U. Werner1, H.O. Lutz1, and R. Mann21Fakultät für Physik, Universität Bielefeld, 33615 Bielefeld — 2Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI), 64291 Darmstadt

We report measurements of the kinetic energy release (KER) distribution and angular distributions of fragment ions from collisions of CO2 molecules with highly charged Xe-ions. The applied technique is based on a position- and time-sensitive multi-particle detector which allows the coincident measurement of the momenta of correlated fragment ions. If all fragments from a particular fragmentation are detected a kinematically complete study of the molecular break-up process is possible. In collisions with MeV/u Xe18+ and Xe43+ ions processes leading to correlated Cp+ + Oq+ + Or+ fragment ion triples with a total charge p+q+r up to at least 6 are observed. For these reactions the fragmentation dynamics may be analyzed in terms of three independent parameters which can be derived from the measured velocity vectors. A practical choice consists of the total kinetic energy release and two angles in velocity space. The derived energy and angular spectra are compared to the prediction of a point-charge Coulomb-explosion model.
