Dissociative and non-dissociative one electron capture by 150-1000 eV/amu He2+ in CO — •D.R. Gillen, D.M. Kearns, D. Voulot, R.W. McCullough, H.B. Gilbody, and J.B. Greenwood — The Atomic and Molecular Physics Research Division, The School of Mathematics and Physics, Queen’s University Belfast, Belfast BT7 1NN, N. Ireland, UK.

He2+ ions present in the solar wind capture electrons from cometary gases such as CO, CO2 and H2O producing Lyman-Alpha emissions from He+ and the distinctive blue light from CO+ observed from comets such as Hale-Bopp. In the present study translational energy spectroscopy(TES)was used to identify the main one-electron capture channels in collisions of He2+ with CO. The relative importance of dissociative and non-dissociative electron capture has been determined. For example, at a collision energy of 1 keV/amu non-dissociative one electron capture resulting in He+ (n=2,3) formation accounted for 45 collision energy of 150 eV/amu we have observed 100 dissociative capture, with He+ formed in the ground state.
