The fact, that today for ca. 90% of the up to now known fine structure levels the hyperfine constants are known, makes it possible to check classifications and to classify lines. A computer program generates suggestions and shows the hyperfine structure to be expected. The calculated pattern can be compared with a highly resolved Fourier transform spectrum (absolute accuracy of the wavenumber position of the lines 0.002 cm−1). The width of the lines (Doppler width and apparatus profile) is about 2 GHz, so in most cases the hyperfine structures are well resolved. Ta lines, which appear in the spectrum, but cannot be explained by the existing energy levels, are excited by laser light. Detection is performed by laser-induced fluorescence. From the observed hyperfine pattern and the wavelengths of excited and fluorescence lines the energy position, parity, total angular momentum and the hyperfine constants of new levels can be determined.
