Optical response of Rb atoms near glass surface in the attenuated total reflection — •Tojo Satoshi, Shimamoto Atsuyoshi, Hasuo Masahiro, and Fujimoto Takashi — Dept. of Engineering Physics and Mechanics, Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School at Kyoto University, Yoshidahommachi Sakyoku Kyotoshi Kyoto Japan ZIP:606-8501

By using a vapor cell with a prism on one side and a diode laser as the light source, we have observed the spectra of the attenuated total reflection(ATR) at a glass/Rb-vapor interface due to resonance of Rb atoms. With an increase in the Rb atom density at an angle close to the critical angle, the hyperfine structure splitting resolved spectra reveal that the absorption peaks shift to lower frequency side. With an increase in the incident angle, the ATR spectra show broadening. The shift is explained by a simple model with the complex dielectric function of Rb vapor including the Doppler broadening, but the broadening cannot be explained quantitatively by this model.

We will discuss effects of the pseudo-momentum of the evanescent light and the transit time broadening on the spectral profile. We will also discuss effects of the resonance broadening due to the atomic collisions on the ATR spectra.
