In measurements of high voltages up to a few hundred kV, an accuracy of 2·10−6 at 100 kV has been demonstrated by using voltage dividers. We are testing an alternative method based on collinear spectroscopy of an ion beam accelerated with the voltage to be measured. Hereby the applied voltage is determined by the Doppler shift of an optical resonance relative to the resonance position of the ions at rest. Since systematic errors scale weakly with increasing voltage this technique reaches best results for highest voltage. To demonstrate the feasibility of the concept a prototype of the voltmeter designed for 40 kV has been set up and is presently beeing tested. A calcium ion beam is superimposed collineary by a laser beam. A compact diode laser system [1] is used for excitation of metastable states (850 nm). To reach the required accuracy the laser wavelength must be measured with a relative error of 5·10−9. For this purpose a travelling Mach-Zehnder interferometer was constructed. For an absolute reference the precisely known wavelength of cesium (852 nm) is used. We will show first results of our apparatus for which we estimated an absolute error of 0.3 V.
